Winnipeg
artist Joshua Stanton delivers a multi-disciplinary approach to his
work, crossing artistic barriers when he performs as a classically
trained master sitarist. Trained at the Alberta College of Art Josh
majored in painting with a minor in artist video. Leaving his formal
training behind, he continues to expand his approach by mixing techniques
and medias (gouache and pen and ink) with commissions in interiors,
magazines and illustration.
Creating portraits of the leading women in Canadian politics for
Dancing Backwards, Josh has had an opportunity to work individually
with the personalities while amassing the first collection of
portraits of its kind. The challenge was to produce a cohesive
collection from an array of mixed-quality primary sources (amateur
photos, studio portraits and newspaper clippings). Using pen and
ink he has produced amazing likenesses of the women that capture
their dynamic qualities.
Currently Josh is working
on a series of ironic illustrations for Heartland's book Great
Scots! (November 2003). These tongue-in-cheek drawings trace the
vital and pervasive role the Scots played in the creation of Canada.
When not working on commercial art projects, Josh experiments
aesthetically to create a point of contact between classical Indian
culture and contemporary western culture through music and art.
