Amanda
Dow Illustrator A Calgary native, Amanda Dow trained
as an archeologist at the University of Calgary
and continues to work on a regular basis on archeological digs
throughout Alberta. Her natural artistic talent found
expression in interpretive drawings of the
sites she encountered.
Sacagawea: The Making of A Legend
is Amanda's second book as a primary artist,
the first was Blackships / Thanadelthur (Young Hereos of NorthAmerica Vol. 1) Both
books required much archival research into the colorful and
distinctive world of early north american cultures and American, French
and British colonial costumes. The result are colorful,
lively and descriptive illustrations that
draw readers into a world so little seen.
Amanda's work can also be seen In Search of Ancient
Alberta, a route-oriented driving guide
to ancient landforms and archeology in Alberta. She is also the
featured illustrator in Exploring the Fur Trade
Routes of North America, highlighting
key figures and events in history.
Her work is becoming familiar to Calgarians; chosen
to illustrate a series of panels for the environmental
expo in 1997, she illustrated how the Calgary area
had changed through the ages. Recently Amanda's a visit to Cardston,
Alberta resulted in a drawing of ancient horses and
hunters, with The Calgary Herald subsequently
chosing it to headline with the front page story. National
Geographic has also used one of the illustrations
on its interactive news page.
