Matthew
Shaw Author of Great Scots! Matthew Shaw was born in Montana but
has lived most of his life in BC. He spent
several years as asawmill labourer and as a financial consultant.
He eventually went to school and graduated
from the Universite d'Aix-Marseille and
Simon Fraser University and later received an MA from California
State University. His eclectic background
and education have led him inexorably to writing. For the last twelve years, Matthew
and his wife have been Humanities teachers at
an Adult Education school in Prince George, BC. During the winter,
they live in Southern California, and in
summertime, they spend as much time as possible at
their lakeside cottage. Their interests include traveling, canoeing
and hiking. Their son is almost four.
Matthew's writing interests are varied.
His first book, To Live Deliberately, published
in 2001, deals with breaking social conventions and developing
a philosophy of self-determination. Matthew's essays
have appeared in national magazines, including
"Maclean's". One of his enduring interests is the complex
and seemingly indefinable nature of Canadian identity.
Matthew's next book, Great Scots! How
the Scots Created Canada is scheduled
for publication in the fall of 2003.
