Laird Rankin was hired by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1967 to mastermind
the North American travels of the Nonsuch replica. Though he had
never set foot on a sailing ship before, he quickly learned the
hazards of navigating a seventeeth-century ketch through the schools
of the twentieth-century. Often, during his seven years with the
HBC, he remarked to friends that one day he would write a book about
it. And when the ship had been transferred to the Manitoba Museum,
he did just that.
Following his years with the HBC, Rankin served as executive
director of the Alumni Association of the University of Manitoba
from 1975-1994, and edited its alumni magazine for the same period.
He was the founding executive director of Canada's National History
Society, 1994-2001, and was publisher of its popular history magazine,
The Beaver, from 1997 until his retirement in 2004. A graduate
of the University of Manitoba, he lives in Winnipeg. He has two
sons, Scott and Matthew.
