The Honourable Dr. Jon Gerrard, PC , MLA , BA, Ph.D, MD has been the leader
of the Liberal Party in Manitoba since 1997, and a federal Liberal Member of
Parliament (MP) from 1993 to 1997.
Gerrard grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, earning a Bachelor of Arts
degree from the University of Saskatchewan (1967), an MD from McGill
University (1971) and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in Pediatrics
and Pharmacology. Trained as a physician, he worked extensively with cancer
patients, while also developing an interest in endangered species and
writing a book on bald eagles, The Bald Eagle: Haunts and Habits of a
Wilderness Monarch (Smithsonian Institute Press).
A quiet man of passion, Gerrard brings the same commitment to the Liberal
Party that he once did to saving the lives of children with cancer. The
impetus to write Battling for a Better Manitoba stemmed from his interest in
the powerful figures that shaped much of early Manitoba, both infrastructure
and politics. The opportunity to put these personalities, and in fact the
history of the Liberal party into one context, is a contribution to the
province's that Gerrard hopes will be used by and inspire young Manitobans.
