The Spirit of the Ride culminates a lifelong fascination with horses for Dr. Joel Walker. One of his earliest memories is of his first day at summer camp, where he watched a majestic black horse gallop across a field and stop at a rippling lake to drink. Through his childhood and adolescence, he was captivated by stories of horses and marvelled in the freedom and spirit that the horse so eloquently symbolizes.

As an adult, Joel has continued to indulge his fascination and, during the past decade, has enlarged on this passion through his superb photography, capturing the spirit of the horses of the RCMP Musical Ride'"and the men and women who work and live with them. Over the years, he has become an adopted member of the Ride, and has earned the friendship and trust of many members.

When he's not photographing horses, Joel practices psychiatry in Toronto, where he continues to be a passionate believer in the strength of the human spirit. He uses phototherapy techniques to enhance patient therapy, and has produced an online book that can be viewed at www.portraitsofthehumanspirit.com. His images have been published in Time, Life, National Geographic, Popular Photography and Maclean's, and he has had interactive photographic exhibitions in New York, Mexico City, Vienna and Prague.

Married to Marlene, he has two adult children, Adam and Elysha. His family also includes a German sheppard /husky cross named Kaya, and Red, a quarterhorse gelding that he always rides bareback.
