Born in Romania, Herb Schulz was raised on a farm at Grandview, Manitoba, and farmed himself for fifteen years after World War II. During that time, he was also a political activist in farm politics in Manitoba and ultimately a director of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture. These experiences resulted in Herb's 2004 book, Betrayal: Agriculture Politics in the Fifties, published by the University of Calgary.
After leaving the farm, he worked with his father as vice-president and
general manager of a family-owned residential building company and then,
from 1978 to 1991, taught in the Faculty of Management (now the Asper School
of Business) at the University of Manitoba. Today, he operates his own real
estate firm. He is married with three children and four grandchildren.
A View from The Ledge grew out of his experiences as special assistant to
Premier Ed Schreyer from August 1971 to October 1977 when, as he writes, he
"had a cat-bird seat in the New Democratic government". His book, subtitled
An Insider's Look at the Schreyer Years, presents a view of government the
public never sees.
